The Thesis Statement or Theme

Like the rest of the essays, it is important to write down a thesis statement for a narrative essay. A thesis can be revealed through narrative slowly with the actions and the interaction of your character. Without Dialogues

Upon entering the room, she saw her son with a scissor in one hand and her wedding dress in another. She told him to rush towards him. She couldn’t get to him on time, for he had already damaged it. He did not want his mother to marry another man other than his dad.

With Dialogues

She entered the room to find her son with her newly bought wedding dress.

“What are you doing-” she saw the scissors in his other hand.

“Ray, listen to me. Drop the scissors down, please,” she let out, nearing him.

“I won’t let you marry him,” Ray’s lips quivered as he threatened to cut her dress, “he is not my dad.”

“ Honey stop…”

...He was too quick for her.

Dialogue Punctuation

Here are a few punctuation rules that you should follow:

  • Use comma inside the closing quotation mark when separating the dialogue from the dialogue tag.

“Sorry, but I don’t know you,” he replied walking away.

  • New Paragraph or a new line for a new speaker.

“What’s wrong with me Ma,” the boy whispered to his mother.

“Nothing’s wrong with you, son,” she replied patting his hairless head.

  • When punctuating dialogues in reverse use a comma still to separate the dialogue from the dialogue tag. Remember to enclose the period within the closing quotation marks.

Hurrying away her amnesia-stricken husband said, ”Jesus Christ! Stop following me, woman.”

  • No need for the closing quotation in a new line if the dialogue comes from the same speaker.

“I told everyone to stay stationed, but no! You had to disobey my orders,” the Colonel shouted marching swiftly across the line of his commanding battalion.

“You meddled with the locals, drunk and out of your minds. Some of you might not remember but you were beaten up, dragged, and brought to the front gates by the local police.

“Beaten up by the locals with their bare fists,” the Colonel spat walking away.
